Belles Heures Like the Duke of Berry's Book of Hours, the music of his time tells the story of the months of the year, seasons of the heart, and of a war that would last for one hundred years. As a lover of art and music, the Duke of Berry claimed as protegè the greatest poet and composer of the fourteenth century, Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377). With an impressive collection of narrative and lyric poetry, songs, and sacred music, Machaut influenced writers and musicians for more than a century after his death. Ciaramella will explore Machaut's love songs and allegorical motets, the subtle art from a generation of his students, songs inspired by his poetry, music of the Hundred Years's War, and rustic dances that would have been heard in the fields illuminated in the Book of Hours. Featuring poetry and music by: Machaut, Grimace, Piquigny, Solages, Christine de Pizan, and Charles d'Orléans. Karen Clark, Anna Levenstein, N. Lincoln Hanks, voices |

The German Orpheus and his Student: Heinrich Isaac and Ludwig Senfl In 1490, the young Ludwig Senfl joined the Imperial Choir of Maximilian I. Thus began a lifelong relationship with his teacher Heinrich Isaac, one of the great composers of his day. Following in the footsteps of his master, Senfl hoped to bring a great legacy of polyphonic music to Renaissance Germany. Ciaramella performs works on shared themes by the two composers, with recorders, shawms, sackbut, and bagpipes. Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, recorder, shawm, bagpipe |

Civic Music from the Venetian Republic Like Los Angeles, another city by the sea, Renaissance Venice prided herself on her commerce, culture, and trade with the exotic Orient. The rulers of the city paid for lavish music praising their greatness. Performers and composers flocked to the city to show their invention and prowess. At the center of the musical scene lay the church of St. Mark's. Its special shape as a Greek cross made possible gorgeous antiphonal music. The rotunda of City Hall follows a similar design, making it a perfect place to recreate music by the virtuoso composers Giovanni Gabrielli, Picchi, Farina, Castello, Fontana, and of course, Monteverdi. Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, recorder, dulcian |

Music from the Tower The Medieval tower held prisoners of war and love, inspiring songs by imprisoned nobles King Richard the Lionheart and Duke Chales d'Orlèans, one of the most famous poets of the fifteenth-century. The tower housed night watchmen, who guarded cities and towns, played music to announce the hours of the day, and sounded horns to alert of impending danger. A high and intimate space where imprisoned hearts watch, sing, and dream of love, the tower serves as a musical metaphor, a border between freedom and chains, between love and war, between restrained civilization and erotic wilderness. Featuring music by: Girault de Bornhel, Richard the Lionheart, Dufay, Binchois, and more. Karen Clark, voice |
